Why Would My Husband Suddenly Start Taking His Phone Into The Bathroom, The Shower, The Garden — Anywhere But The Same Room As Me?

I opened the messages expecting another woman. Instead, every transfer I’d made over the last year had been forwarded to the same account, always followed by one photo: a little girl in a hospital bed. Then I reached the oldest message. “She must never know she’s paying for this. She’d stop you.” My hands started shaking so badly I almost dropped the phone.

The next morning I drove to the address from the transfers before my husband even woke up. It wasn’t an apartment. It was a children’s hospice. A nurse looked at me, then quietly asked, “You’re Ben’s wife, aren’t you?” Before I could answer, she brought out a little girl who ran straight toward the front door, smiling at a photograph of my husband on the wall.

Under it was a plaque with the words that shattered everything I’d believed about my marriage: “In Loving Memory Of Emily Bennett — Daughter Of Benjamin And Laura Bennett.” I hadn’t discovered an affair. I’d discovered the child my husband had buried five years before he ever met me.
