The first message simply read, “She’ll never suspect a thing. See you after the flight.” The second was a hotel confirmation for two people—our destination, our dates, but under a woman’s name I had never heard before. The third was a selfie of them together, taken only an hour before he kissed me goodbye at home. I looked up from the phone just as he smiled at me from the baggage carousel, asking if I’d found the boarding passes.
I said nothing. I handed him the phone back, boarded the plane beside him, and spent the entire flight pretending to sleep while planning every move. The moment we landed, I told him I’d forgotten something at baggage claim and walked straight to the hotel reception instead. “I’d like to know,” I said, placing our reservation on the desk, “who’s staying in the second room booked under my husband’s credit card.”
The receptionist’s face changed the instant she looked at the screen. She looked at me, then quietly asked, “You’re his wife… so who is the woman already waiting upstairs calling herself Mrs. Carter?”
