My hands were shaking as I opened the box with my name on it. Inside were copies of every anniversary card he’d supposedly written his wife but never given her, every birthday gift he’d told me she’d “never appreciated,” and a journal in her handwriting. On the first page she wrote, “If you’re reading this, he finally sent you here instead of telling her the truth.” I realized the box had never been meant for me alone.
She knew about me almost from the beginning. She’d hired a private investigator, read every message, and decided that confronting either of us would only make him lie harder. So she waited. She filled that box with proof that every story he’d told me about her was the exact opposite of reality—and that the same promises he’d whispered to me had once been whispered to three women before me.
At the very bottom was a small envelope addressed to us both. Inside was a single key and one sentence: “The storage unit holds everything he couldn’t explain away. Meet me there if you ever want the whole truth.”
