I’m The Wife His Family Never Wanted Him To Marry

Inside the folder were screenshots. Hundreds of them. Every message I’d ever sent her son—edited before they were forwarded to him. In one, she’d erased the words “I love you” and replaced them with “Do whatever you want.” In another, she’d cut off the last half of my text so it looked like I’d refused to visit when she was in the hospital. There were recordings too. She had been calling each of us separately, changing just enough words each time to keep us quietly suspicious of one another. Twelve years of tiny cuts, never deep enough to expose, only enough to keep trust from ever healing.

At the very bottom was a video she had recorded the night before. She looked straight into the camera, exhausted, older than I’d ever seen her. “He deserves to know,” she whispered. “I don’t think I have time to tell him myself.” She admitted everything. Every lie. Every fake message. Every birthday she claimed I had forgotten, every argument she had carefully started and stepped away from. “I wanted him to need me more than he needed you,” she said, before lowering her eyes. “I won too many times.”

I copied the folder before backing up her phone. That evening my husband found me sitting at the kitchen table with the laptop open. He almost laughed when I told him there was something he needed to watch. Twenty minutes later he was crying harder than I had seen him cry at his father’s funeral. Then he looked at me and said the one sentence I had waited twelve years to hear: “You were telling the truth all along… and I let someone else decide who my wife was.”
