Policy Beneficiary Revealed

Part 3 — Policy Beneficiary Revealed

The beneficiary on my $750,000 policy was a woman named Rosalie Kemp, listed as my sister. I have one sister, and she has been gone since 1996.

Rosalie Kemp turned out to be Chelseas mother. The caregiver I did not have was a part she planned to play for the examiner on Thursday at ten, sitting in my kitchen chair and answering every question for me.

I did what thirty-eight years in the ICU had taught me. I stayed calm, wrote everything down, and made two calls. One to the Muskegon police, and one to Gloria in medical records, who printed every page of the fax for the detective.

Detective Lindqvist asked me to keep the appointment. The examiner, a real paramedic named Dave who knew nothing of the scheme, met her team in the parking lot. I sat in my chair in the front room, and at five to ten Rosalie knocked on my door in scrubs.

She introduced herself as my caregiver and reached for the clipboard. Detective Lindqvist stepped out of my hallway and asked to see her identification. The scrubs belonged to a hospital she had never worked for.

She was arrested on my porch without a raised voice. Chelsea was picked up that afternoon at the pharmacy in Portage where the release had been faxed. Her phone held a notepad full of my signature, practiced again and again.

Kevin took it hard. The detective let me sit in the room when she told him. He had vouched for Chelsea, introduced her to the family, and set up the app. He sat with his head in his hands and said one thing: Ma, I am so sorry.

I told him what I had told a thousand frightened families at a bedside. You did not do this. Someone did this to you. A son who is fooled is a victim of the same crime, and the best thing he can do is tell the truth and stay. He told the detective everything.

Chelsea and Rosalie were charged with attempted insurance fraud, identity theft, forgery, and filing a false medical release. The insurer cancelled the application the same day and flagged the ring, and two other Ottawa County families were warned.

My chart was recalled, and the hospital audited every record it had sent out. A letter of apology came from Glorias director, with a promise to tighten every release. She kept it.

The marriage was annulled for fraud. Kevin moved back in for a while, and we spent the winter cooking Sunday roasts. The next week a nurse I had trained drew my blood for my physical, with Kevin holding my hand. I have never been so glad to see a needle.
